What is now the city of Gonzales, Louisiana was established by the descendants of French and Spanish settlers in the early 1850s. While living among Houma Indians in the area, Gonzales grew with a cultural mix creating a truly unique community and rich history. Nestled in the quickly growing Ascension parish, Gonzales has over 10,500 residents in approximately 8.5 square miles. Highway 61 and Interstate 10 border the city, with downtown Baton Rouge less than 23 miles to the northwest and downtown New Orleans about 60 miles to the southeast. Gonzales was proclaimed the “Jambalaya Capital of the World” in 1968. The city host the popular Jambalaya Festival each year, drawing crowds of almost 50,000 people. With over 80 restaurants and eateries, state of the art parks, youth sports leagues, a local newspaper (The Gonzales Weekly Citizen), boutique shops as well as outlet shopping, it is easy to see why so many people call the city of Gonzales home.
