French Settlement is a unique village in Livingston Parish Louisiana. Although not incorporated until 1965 the area was settled more than 165 years before in 1800. French, Italian and German immigrants created a home along the Amite River through hard work and strong family values. These sawmill workers, fur trappers and farmers left their mark on the land of French Settlement. The love of rural living continues in this culturally rich village, home of the Creole House Museum and the historic St. Joseph Catholic Church. Today French Settlement includes over 1,100 residents in 2.7 square miles that flows along Hwy 16 south of Port Vincent. Included in the Livingston Parish School System, French Settlement is home to an elementary school and a high school. Locally owned delis and market shops are available in the village with restaurants and larger stores in the adjacent towns of St Amant, Prairieville, Port Vincent and Maurepas. French Settlement has hosted the Creole Festival yearly since 1977.
